Ian Irvin
I am happily married and have two sons aged 26 and 24 years. I have a very full life through my large extended family, which keeps me nicely busy. I am an Ordained Elder in the Church of Scotland and I am active in a number of Church organisations. I am a past Chairman of the PTA at my sons’ High School, and also a past Chairman of my local Children’s Sports Day Gala, which is a big event in our part of Edinburgh. I enjoy travelling, and have done all my life, indeed during 2008 my wife and I took a Travel Gap Year during which we travelled to 25 countries throughout the world, doing so with a measure of style and panache. I am 53 years old and in good health.
Work History
Jan 2009 – , Director, Trong Trang Limited (Isle of Man) I am invested into a small company which, in turn, is financing a small Australian company seeking to establish a Hotel Training School and Resort on Phu Quoc Island, which is off the south west coast of Vietnam. The Australian company has the rights to deliver hospitality courses for, and on behalf of, the TAFE South Australia, http://www.tafe.sa.edu.au , but what makes the venture interesting is the fact that it can be seamlessly linked to a resort development. In Vietnam foreign ventures need a 50% local partner, but we have negotiated an exemption from that requirement due to the fact that we are providing a training facility, in addition to a resort. All land in Vietnam is owned by the state but we have secured a 50 year lease on a large site, which in turn is part of an integrated development in Phu Quoc. I am currently leading the negotiations with international banks in Saigon regarding this venture. |
June 2009 - , Par Equity LLC I have recently joined the Par Equity investor syndicate www.parequity.com, and I have also become a member of their Advisory Panel. They are a Business Angel Syndicate through which I am currently evaluating a number of exciting opportunities. |
1996 - , Owner and Manager, Ian Irvin and Co. This is my own business through which I co-ordinate my current, and evolving, business activities. |
Apr 1998 – Sep 2007, Joint Managing Director and Finance Director, AMZ Holdings Plc (Isle of Man) This Group, formerly known as Amazing Holdings Plc, was co-founded by myself and my colleague in Taiwan, Tim Potter, a fellow Scot. We had a wholly owned operational Company, being Amazing Limited (Isle of Man) and a wholly owned Taiwanese subsidiary, being Amazing Taiwan Company Limited (Taiwan). We successfully brought the Company to the Alternative Investment Market (AIM) of the London Stock Exchange in December 2005. I was responsible for all aspects of the AIM Flotation. The Group had secured a 27 acre beach fronted site in the Penghu Islands, Taiwan, and is, at this time, working steadily towards the establishment of a high quality international Casino Resort on that site. The land purchase became one of the largest, most complex, Real Estate transactions ever undertaken in Taiwan and it was certainly the first where ownership rested with a non Taiwanese entity. We bought the land from almost 300 different land owners, doing so in a single consolidated transaction. The land was then subjected to a complex re zoning process from agricultural to commercial use, and was also the subject of a detailed environmental impact study. I was responsible for all the commercial, financial and legal issues associated with this land transaction. The authorities, as was expected, recently passed legislation to allow gaming in the Penghu Islands and this means that the Company is now embarked on a venture that could involve a construction project of about US$1 billion. I believe that the key to success is not so much knowing what you can do, but rather knowing what you cannot do, and managing a project of that magnitude is outside of my comfort zone. Thus, in agreement with colleagues, I asked to step down from the Board in order to make way for the next generation of management. The Company has recently appointed Merrill Lynch in New York to evaluate strategic options and the current expectation is that the Company will either be sold to a major Casino operator or else it will enter into a strategic alliance with a major operator. I remain a major shareholder in AMZ Holdings Plc, http://www.amazing.co.im, and together with my co-founder, and the other founding shareholders, still account for well over 50% of the Ordinary Share Capital. I am fully supportive of the current Board of Directors and the strategies that they are following. In recognition of the work that I did with AMZ Holdings Plc I was nominated for, and became a finalist of, the prestigious Institute of Directors, Scotland, Director of the Year Awards. |
Oct 2007 – Mar 2008, Non Executive Director, AMZ Holdings Plc (Isle of Man) I was asked, by the Chairman, to remain on the Board until such times as the new management team was established and a further funding package was secured. This I did and I stepped down as details regarding the additional funding package were announced. The current value of the Company's Real Estate in Penghu is about £30 million, notwithstanding gaming. |
1998 - , Executive Director, Water Separation Membrane Technologies Limited (Isle of Man) This company has the selling rights for Taiwan for the German based company called Rochem who have an Ultra Filtration technology, which can convert black and grey water to drinking water. I saw the unit demonstrated a few years ago in Genoa, Italy, where I saw slurry going into the unit at one end and drinking water come out of the unit at the other end. The environmental advantages of this technology are clearly significant. We are currently negotiating the extension of our current rights to include certain emerging business opportunities in China. |
1999-2000, Non Executive Director, WorldArt.Com Limited This company co-ordinated a global exposure of the arts using the Internet as its medium. It generated advertising income based on the volume of web traffic generated. It was also at the forefront of web based TV. |
1998-2000, Non Executive Director, Festival Revue Limited This company has been established to provide a global exposure of the arts to the public during the Edinburgh International Festival through a combination of web TV, cable TV and other related Internet media. It was a wholly owned subsidiary of WorldArt.com Limited. |
1998-1999, Commercial Director, Fisher Power Wave Ltd. I joined the Board of Fisher Power Tools Co. Ltd. in July 1998. The company had reached an agreement to assign to it a very powerful suite of patents, which allowed for a very efficient, and quite revolutionary, power tool. I put in place a £500,000 investment package for the company, which I completed in November 1998. I left the company in 1999 following a disagreement with executive colleagues regarding the company’s strategic development. The Company eventually went into liquidation in 2006 and I tried, unsuccessfully, to buy the patents. |
1994-1996, Finance Director, Magnum Power PLC This company achieved a successful flotation on the USM (Unlisted Securities Market) of the London Stock Exchange in August 1994. I was responsible for all aspects of the flotation reporting directly to the Board. We successfully raised £4.5 million giving the Group a Market Capitalization of £14.5 million post flotation. We did a further placing in March 1995 of £2.3 million and again in March 1996 of £1.5 million. In my role as Finance Director I oversaw the smooth running of the financial reporting system within the Group to ensure that Management and Board received accurate financial reports in a timely manner. I also liaised with the investing institutions on a regular basis. |
1995-1996, Director Special Projects, Magnum Power PLC The company, during the early part of 1995, identified a need to establish strategic relationships with the larger corporations operating in our business sector as a means of securing a volume-manufacturing partner in order that we could jointly supply the OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers who had expressed interest in our technology. We established a “Partners Programme” which I headed. I successfully concluded a partnership agreement with a US Corporation that had a suitable manufacturing plant in India, and I also led the negotiations with the Sumitomo Corporation of Japan that resulted in a Distribution Agreement being signed to give them rights to sell the technology in Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore. The ability, as a result of the “Partners Programme”, to have a sensible supply arrangement resulted in the Group being able to quote seriously to the major OEM’s and when I left in May 1996 we had quotations outstanding of US $140 million. |
1990-1996, Executive Director, Magnum Power Solutions Limited I co-founded this company in February 1990 and successfully took it from two £1 Ordinary Shares through to a successful Stock Market flotation as part of the Magnum Power PLC group. There was considerable press, and professional, interest in the company and I was invited, as a result, by the Chairman of the Institute of Directors in Scotland to be a keynote speaker at Gleneagles for their Annual Conference in November 1994. |
1988-1990, Director, Business Information International Limited This was my first proper move into business in my own right. The company was a small consulting group that sought to manage and finance projects that were brought forward by the Directors of the company. It was through this company that I met Vin Lavin with whom I subsequently co-founded Magnum Power Solutions Limited, and it was also through this company that I met Tim Potter, who was our Far East Director, and with whom I co-founded Amazing Holdings PLC. |
1987-1988, Corporate Loan Executive, UCB Bank PLC I opened the Edinburgh office for the UCB Bank PLC, which was part of the Compagnie Bancaire Group from Paris, France. |
1986-1987, Area Manager, Manchester Exchange and Investment Bank Limited (Manex) I was head hunted from industry into this position. Manex was a small Merchant Bank whose principal offices were in London and Manchester, with branch offices in Leeds, Bristol and Edinburgh. I worked from their Edinburgh office. |
1984-1986, Cash Controller, Ferranti Defence Systems Limited I was responsible for all cash movements within Ferranti Defence Systems Limited and Ferranti Industrial Electronics Limited, as well as monitoring the cash flows of other associated Group companies within Scotland. |
1982-1984, Management Accountant, TMC Division, Phillips I initially moved to Phillips as the Assistant Financial Accountant, which was my first move into industry. In that position I was responsible for all aspects of financial reporting, both to our UK Group headquarters but also to the Parent company in the Netherlands. I took over, after nine months, the position of Management Accountant within the company and became responsible for the reporting to management of the company’s manufacturing operation. |
1980-1982, Accountant, Scott Moncrieff CA I completed my professional experience with this company following completion of my exams. It was a medium sized company and I worked in all areas of the practice. Latterly, I became the manager of their early moves into company insolvency work. I was also seconded to a client company, as Chief Accountant, following the sudden death of their Finance Director. |
1974-1978, Acting Leading Seaman, Royal Navy I served in the Royal Navy for four years after leaving school. My time in the Royal Navy has had a profound impact on me and gave me the confidence to progress my varied career to date. I still have a keen interest in the Royal Navy. |
